Athlétisme Guadeloupe
If there is one sport that has followers in Guadeloupe, it is athletics; the island has its own regional athletics league located in Pointe-à-Pitre.
Some Guadeloupean athletes have even reached the top, a few names:
- Roger Bambuck, a 100m and 200m sprinter in the 1960s.
- Claude Issorat, a para-athlete in the 1990s, competed over several distances, 100m, 200m, 400m and 1500m, and was a multiple gold medalist at the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
- Patricia Girard, a leading specialist in the 100m hurdles for nearly 10 years, reached European and world podiums several times.
- Marie-José Pérec, a major figure in athletics in Guadeloupe, in France and internationally. She is the only French athlete to have won 3 Olympic gold medals, in the 400m in 1992, and a double in 1996 in the 200m and 400m.
- Christine Arron, a French reference athlete in sprinting, as she won the European title in the 100m in 1998 and won two bronze medals in the 100m and 200m at the 2005 World Championships. Unfortunately, several injuries prevented her from being present at certain major events. A fine record and a long career for this athlete, who is still present in the starting blocks, perhaps for new medals.
The Guadeloupe regional athletics league is an association founded in 1960; it has territorial exclusivity in Guadeloupe in terms of athletics. Its objective is to defend the material and moral interests of athletics and of the clubs present on the island. 23 athletics clubs are present in Guadeloupe, or nearly 2,500 registered members to date across all disciplines. Three quarters of Guadeloupean municipalities have an athletics club. The CREPS (Regional Center for Popular Education and Sport) in Les Abymes hosts an athletics hope center, providing training and coaching for tomorrow's future champions.
Many athletics events are offered every year, ranging from local events to major meetings such as the international athletics meeting of the greater Caribbean, where major international and Guadeloupean athletes were present.
