Volley ball Guadeloupe

The number of its players, its supporters and all the Guadeloupeans who occasionally play this sport on the beaches shows Guadeloupe's attachment to volleyball. Indeed, 25% of the members of the French Volleyball Federation (FFVB) belong to the Guadeloupe volleyball league (LGVB).

Guadeloupe's players are divided among 12 clubs that regularly make a name for themselves in local and national competitions: l'Arsenal Club, l'A.S Jeunesse des Trois-Rivières, l'Union sportive de Goyave, l'A.O.B de Baillif, le Comité Marie-Galantais de Volley-Ball, l'Étoile de Morne à l'eau, le Volley-Ball Club de Gosier, l'A.S.C. le Fumerolles Racin'Beach, l'I.U.F.M de Pointe-à-Pitre and l'A.S.C. Volley-Ball de Baie Mahault.

Volleyball and beach volleyball

Apart from l'A.O.B de Baillif, l'A.S.C. Fumerolles and l'A.S Jeunesse des Trois-Rivières, all these Guadeloupe clubs also officially play beach volleyball. This is a version of the sport played outdoors and on sand with teams reduced to 2 or 4 players. Beach volleyball has been played informally since the 1920s. It was regulated in the 1960s and added to the Olympic program at the Atlanta Games in 1996.

Volleyball is a complete sport with simple rules that requires good physical condition and skill. In this it is as interesting for players as for spectators, which has undoubtedly earned it its popularity. It is played by two teams of 6 players (3 attackers and 3 defenders) on a court 9 m by 18 m. Points are scored when the ball touches the opponent's floor. The regulation characteristics of the ball are a diameter of 66 cm and a pressure of 0.31 kg/cm². The origin of this sport, now played internationally, is interesting.

Origin of volleyball

Volleyball is a relatively recent sport, invented in 1895 by pastor Morgan to keep the members of the Young Men Christian Association (YMCA) of Holyoke (Massachusetts), of which he was sports director, occupied during the winter. He imagined a sport in which 2 teams of 9 players compete without violence indoors. He drew inspiration from badminton (minton), kept the net but raised it to 1.98 m, set the court dimensions at 7.6 m by 15.2 m, replaced the shuttlecock with a basketball bladder, the racket with the bare hand, and called it "mintonette". Shortly afterwards, Dr. Halstead, a mere observer, suggested a name more representative of what actually happens during this game in which the ball flies over the net: volleyball.
