Langouste Guadeloupe

In Guadeloupe there are two types of spiny lobster: the Caribbean spiny lobster (Palinurus argus), also called the royal spiny lobster, and the Brazilian spiny lobster (Panulirus guttatus). Spiny lobsters are decapod crustaceans. They live on rocky bottoms where they find many shelters.

The Caribbean spiny lobster has 10 legs and 2 large antennae, and is brown in color. It is the largest of the Caribbean spiny lobsters. It can measure up to 60 cm.

The Brazilian spiny lobster is brown-red, speckled with white; it has 10 legs and two antennae that are longer than its body. It measures between 12 and 45 cm.

Spiny lobsters hide during the day in crevices of rocky bottoms. When in danger they swim quickly backwards.

Lobster fishing is regulated in Guadeloupe. It is forbidden to spear a spiny lobster, and night hunting with a light source is also forbidden. It is also forbidden to capture spiny lobsters carrying eggs. Spiny lobsters must measure at least 21 cm for the royal spiny lobster and 14 cm for the Caribbean spiny lobster.

The regulations prohibit lobster fishing in Guadeloupe from January 1 to March 31.

Many restaurants located in Guadeloupe will offer you grilled lobster. Some restaurants that have a lobster tank will let you choose your lobster.
